New details about the upcoming Audi e-tron model range have surfaced. Previewed by the original e-tron concept, the R8 e-Tron will be launched in 2012. The production for the vehicle will initially be limited to 100 units, but it will later be expanded to 1000 annually.

According to Rupert Stadler, Audi CEO, “We want to listen to the customer. It will be a different experience with the electric car in terms of usage, noise, torque quality and our engineers need to get familiar with customer needs.” This could mean that Audi may customize future e-trons according on initial customer input.

To fire up the teaser-driven marketing campaign for the Audi A1, a new video has been released giving us a glimpse of the design of the upcoming small car.

In the video, A1 interior designer Ivo van Hulten describes his designing process, “We first concentrated on this horizontal dash panel, but then we had the idea that it might look good if we made it like an aircraft wing with the engines suspended from it.”

Audi unveiled its latest e-tron concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The low-slung sporty two-door Audi e-tron Detroit show car is fitted with a pair of electric motors.

The Audi e-tron Detroit show car weighs 2975 pounds—courtesy of the Audi Space Frame designed aluminum structure—and is powered by two mid-mounted electric motors that total 204 horsepower. The e-tron sprints from zero to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds. And with its efficient use of battery and electronics, the e-tron show car has a range of around 155 miles.

Since 2008, reports of a hybrid of Audi’s Q5 have been circulating the internet. Now, Audi confirms that it is indeed coming out with a hybrid version of the compact SUV.

According to Audi, the Q5 Hybrid will possibly make its debut in late 2010 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The sales will likely kick off in early 2011.

Although there are still no word on the specifications of the Q5 Hybrid, it is believed that the SUV will use nickel metal hydride batteries instead of the more advanced and expensive lithium –ion batteries.

2011 Audi A8 First to Get a Google Earth-based Nav System

Audi has announced that its 2011 Audi A8 will be the first to ever feature a Google Earth –based navigation system.

The system, named as the multimedia interface (MMI) navigation plus has an integrated hard disk for navigation, phone and audio data and a graphics processor that’s capable of generating high-quality, 3D images. The MMI can be inserted with a SIM card, or be paired up with a mobile phone via Bluetooth, to have access to internet.

The optional GPRS/EDGE modem enables the driver to conduct a Google search for points-of-interest via the internet. It can also be pre-programmed with destinations which can be retrieved in the car.

Audi’s aims to set things right and expand its global reach will now be realized with their upcoming Audi A1. The global domination will begin right after the public unveiling of the A1 at the Geneva Motor Show in late summer 2010.

MTM, the German tuning specialist, has just laid its hands on the Audi TT-RS to add a little umph to the sports car.

With its 2.5 Liter turbocharged, direct-injection 5-cylinder engine, the Audi TT-RS is already able to produce an impressive 340 horsepower and torque of up to 332 pound feet between 1,600 rpm and 5,300 rpm. That’s enough to accelerate the TT-RS from 0 to a whopping 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds before hitting its top speed of 297 km/h.

With an electric version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG already in production, Audi has also given the production go signal to its e-tron electric concept. If you can recall the Audi e-tron has made its debut in the recently held Frankfurt Motor Show.

Reducing weight is one of the simplest ways to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. That is the same reason why Audi has created a lightweight version of its A5 coupe. The lightweight version is of course based on the A5, but the engineers in Audi was able to lessen the A5’s weight by more that 240 pounds. The reduction is due to the extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber.

In order to reduce weight, the A5 has ditched its steel body construction for Audi’s aluminum space frame. This makes the prototype 40 percent lighter than the standard A5.
