Reducing weight is one of the simplest ways to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. That is the same reason why Audi has created a lightweight version of its A5 coupe. The lightweight version is of course based on the A5, but the engineers in Audi was able to lessen the A5’s weight by more that 240 pounds. The reduction is due to the extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber.

In order to reduce weight, the A5 has ditched its steel body construction for Audi’s aluminum space frame. This makes the prototype 40 percent lighter than the standard A5.

Audi’s sportiest sportback was finally revealed at the recently held Frankfurt Motor Show. The S5 was based on the A5 sportback which was also revealed by Audi last month. The difference between the two is that the S5 improves the all-around performance of the four-door coupe, thanks in large part to the addition of a supercharged V6.

The S5 Sportback will come with the same 3.0L turbocharged V6 found under the hood of the S4, but it is tweaked to give out 333 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque. At the recently held Frankfurt Motor Show Audi has finally revealed its all electric concept car dubbed the e-tron. Now many say that the e-tron is just an all electric version of the Audi R8, but according to Audi this is a totally different car.

Although technically not an electric version of Audi’s R8 supercar, the e-tron concepts places a heavy emphasis on all-out performance. The e-tron features independent electric motors at all four corners, giving the concept a true quattro all-wheel drive system. Combined output is 313 horsepower and a staggering 3,319 lb-ft or torque.

Two months ago the production version of the Audi R8 Spyder was photographed on the set of Iron Man II being driven by none other than Robert Downey Jr. Finally at the recently held Frankfurt Motor Show the Audi R8 Spyder has been officially unveiled.

The R8 Spyder will only come with a V10 powerplant. The engine will be able to churn out 525 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. Peak torque of 391 pound-feet is achieved at 6,500 rpm. The A4 TDI clean diesel is the latest edition of the company’s 3.0-liter diesel V6. Though TDI V6 has been available in the current generation A4 since it launched last year, the new one adds the same 2,000 BAR common rail fuel system and urea injection found on the Q7 and VW Touareg.
