
It is not uncommon to see Jeep’s ragtop Wrangler in the rugged Rubicon Trail or prowling Venice Beach, California. But the new ‘Cool Car’ regulation just released in California that is aimed at curbing emissions and fuel use by reducing air conditioning power could spell the end of soft-top Wrangler sales in the Golden State.
The regulation was ordered by the California Air Resources Board, and it demands that carmakers install advanced glazing on glass designed to keep air conditioning systems from working too hard in warm weather. The rules are so strict that moonroofs will be black, and flexible plastic like the ones in the Wrangler will not be allowed.
