Toyota Reveals MR2 Sport Hybrid Concept

Toyota has just revealed a new sports car hybrid, the GRMN (Gazoo Racing Master of Nutburging) Sports Hybrid Concept. The event took place at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

The concept, which was based on the MR2, is a four-wheel drive hybrid that is fitted with a mid-mounted 3.3 liter V6 and Toyota’s THSII hybrid system. An electric motor powers then the car at slow speeds. It also shifts the car into front wheel driving. The V6 engine provides more power to motivate the rear wheels. A new hybrid concept was introduced by Toyota at the North American International Auto Show; the FT-CH. Toyota said that the FT-CH could be one possible future of urban commuting.

The FT-CH will be 22 inches shorter than the Prius. The trimmed length would surely be noticed in the legroom and cargo area. Nevertheless, it will be a compact hybrid.

The FT-CH will surely appeal to the retro 80’s gamers out there with its “8-bit” motif which intends “to be fun and innovative, colorful and stylish, with strong appeal to young buyers.”

Tommy Kaira Gives the 2010 Toyota Prius A New Look

Japanese car tuner and manufacturing company Tommy Kaira has just announced a new aero kit that they have been brewing for the 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid.

The green car will get the aero kit that includes front spoilers, side skirts, grille trims and rear aprons that accommodates a diffuser. The aerodynamics kit will either be partially or fully made up of carbon fiber. The exhaust system with the quad tail pipes, which is also part of the kit, is already available for order in Japan.

Tommy Kaira has also announced that its aero kit will be merged with a lowering kit and 18-inch alloy wheels in 215/40 R18 tires with various designs.…

After the successful debut of the Toyota FT-86 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese automaker is now deliberating what the nameplate of the production FT-86 will be.

Reports indicate the Toyota may revive the Celica nameplate as it still has a following among Japanese sporstcar fans. Other reports suggest that once the FT-86 hits US, it will then replace the current Scion tC.

Either way, Toyota may after all use both, as Scion is the only youth-oriented brand in the North America and the Japanese automaker will still need another name for its domestic market.

Toyota’s Prius Plug-in Testing Program Launched

After the Frankfurt Motor Show debut of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota now announces the testing program for the said ecar in Japan. The program is scheduled to run for the next six months and will include 600 units of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid in Japan, Europe and the United States.

230 units will be tested by Japanese government agencies and other utilities. Another 200 units will be divided among France, United Kingdom and Portugal. The United States will get 150 units. The destination of the remaining 20 units is still to be decided. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and ten other European countries are all vying to get a unit.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private, Ltd. (TKM) is planning to unveil a new compact car concept that’s specifically designed for the Indian market at the New Delhi show. Thirteen other concept and production vehicles will also be displayed at the 10th Auto Expo in New Delhi from January 5 to 11, 2010.

Toyota FT-86 To Be ‘Converted’

After the joint-venture of Toyota and Subaru on the long-awaited FT-86 that has been unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota is now contemplating on a convertible version of the sports car.

According to a report from Auto Telegraaf, Toyota is planning of producing a drop-top version of the FT-86. The FT-86 would come with rear-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated 2.0 Liter engine, just like its coupe counterpart. The engine will be backed up by a six-speed manual transmission, but an automatic gearbox would also be an option.

The addition of a turbocharger is also being considered as it can up the horsepower of the FT-86 from 220 to 300 horsepower.

Toyota has recently unveiled its 2010 4Runner SUV at the recently held State Fair of Texas. Before the official unveiling, pictures of the SUV were leaked in the internet. The new 4Runner was revamped inside and out, however it still retains it body-on-frame construction.

About a year ago there was news that Toyota was planning to extend the Prius name to a broader range of vehicles. Recently Toyota has confirmed these speculations with an official confirmation that they will be expanding the brand.

The announcement was made at a Las Vegas gathering of Toyota and Lexus dealers from across the country. Insiders were very careful to point out that the Prius range will not be a full brand like Lexus or Scion.

Instead the Prius brand will be a subset of vehicles within Toyota. No details on what type of vehicles will be released, but rumors about a possible coupe and pickup truck is circling.

In the upcoming Franfurt Motor Show Toyota will be unveiling at least four concept vehicles, including a car version of the first European made hybrid vehicle.

Toyota also confirmed that it will also show a hybrid version of its Auris at the Frankfurt Motor show. Named as the Auris HSD Hybrid, the final production version of the car will start rolling out of Toyota’s Derby Factory in the middle of 2010.
