Honda’s New Solar Hydrogen Station: Now At Your Service

Honda has just announced the launch of a new at-home hydrogen fueling station. The station is developed to help speed along the acceptance of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Offering a possible glimpse into the future of zero-emissions motoring, the Honda Solar Hydrogen Station is capable of running off solar and standard grid power.

The Solar Hydrogen Station is developed at the company’s Los Angeles R&D center. The new fueling center could help in the expansion of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.

Today, hydrogen is only available at a handful of fueling stations, with most concentrated in southern California. This fact has forced many automakers to conduct most fuel-cell research in California – as well as limited work in New York and Washington D.C. – but Honda’s at-home fueling station could eventually change that.

The Solar Hydrogen Station is intended to be set up in a home garage, and it is estimated to provide enough hydrogen fuel for a day’s commute in just an eight hour period. The system can be powered by roof-mounted solar panels or a typical household outlet. It is also designed to work with next-generations smart grids, which would allow the charging station to send unused power back into the system.

Honda’s Solar Hydrogen Station will now be used for the company’s FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle in California.
