Optimal Energy, a South African tech company, will debut their latest electric car Joule at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The Joule concept was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008.

The five-seater will be hand-built when it goes into production in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The electric car will be built with a 65 kW motor producing 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque. With the 36 kWh Lithium-ion battery the car will have a range of approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles).  The battery can be recharged with the on-board charger, letting the car be plugged into a standard outlet.

A new teaser image of the 2011 Volkswagen Sharan has been posted up on VW’s German website a week before its scheduled unveiling in Geneva.

The all-new second-generation MPV has a front end design in compliance with VW’s current design paradigm as seen in VW’s newest models. The 2011 Sharan also appears to be riding on a new set of wheels.  Although it has not yet been confirmed, the MPV is likely to feature a third row bench and sliding rear doors.

Fans of the Hennessey Performance Venom GT won’t be pleased to learn that the upcoming hypercar is not coming to the Geneva Motor Show next month. The cancelled debut was reportedly due to a lack of exhibition space at the event. Reports say however that HP will instead debut the Venom GT at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom this July. As to the US fans, they will get the chance to see the car in Monterey.

Fisker Karma Advanced Space Frame Platform To Debut In Geneva

Fisker is scheduled to announce an aluminum space frame for its Karma vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show. The structure will be the basis of the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid once Finnish firm Valmet Automotive begins assembly of the platform.

The production for the Karma is expected to begin in May. It will feature GM’s 260 horesepower (194 kW / 264 PS) Ecotech 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, and a rear-mounted electric motor producing 403 horsepower (301 kW / 409 PS).  The Fisker Karma is expected to have an all-electric range of about 50 miles (80.5 km) courtesy of its lithium-ion battery pack.

New details about the upcoming Audi e-tron model range have surfaced. Previewed by the original e-tron concept, the R8 e-Tron will be launched in 2012. The production for the vehicle will initially be limited to 100 units, but it will later be expanded to 1000 annually.

According to Rupert Stadler, Audi CEO, “We want to listen to the customer. It will be a different experience with the electric car in terms of usage, noise, torque quality and our engineers need to get familiar with customer needs.” This could mean that Audi may customize future e-trons according on initial customer input.

BERU f1systems engineers have created what they call the “world’s first bike designed and hand built by Formula one engineers.”  The incredibly expensive Factor 001 bicycle has a starting price of £22,000.

The Factor 001 bicycle is a lightweight carbon monocoque frame completely customized to the owner’s physical measurements.  The bicycle does not comply with many rules for competitive cycling, which gave designers the opportunity to create a machine that accelerates quickly with the highest level of stability.  The look of the bike can also be designed to the customer’s wishes, with his or her name engraved on the handlebars.

General Motors already has some of the most advanced and fuel efficient engine on the road. And most of these engines are under the firm’s range of Ecotec four-cylinder engines. But the Detroit automaker announced on Thursday it is readying three U.S. plants for the production of the next-generation Ecotec family.

Investing more than $494 million dollars, GM will be readying three US plants for the production of the next-generation Ecotec engine. This endeavor will produce nearly 500 new jobs.

German tuners AC Schnitzer will debut their newly completed kit for the BMW X1 at the nearing Geneva Motor Show. The BMW X1 kit is the first kit of AC Schnitzer.

Engineers at the German-based tuning company worked on all three diesel engines offered on the X1. The 1.8-liter unit was boosted up to 171 PS (126 kW / 169 hp), while the 2.0-liter engine was pushed up to 210 PS (154 kW / 207 hp).  These changes are offered for both the xDrive and sDrive models.  Also, the twin-turbo 2.3-liter diesel is cranked up to 240 PS (177 kW / 237 hp) from 204 (150 kW / 201 hp).

In anticipation of its debut in the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, I-DE-A Institute has released a new teaser image of its concept car design, the I-DE-A Hybrid concept car.

The Turin-based designer did hold back on further information about the concept car. As currently, all that is known about the concept car is that it is a four-seat hybrid sedan. One thing’s for sure though, I-DE-A gave more emphasis on the vehicle’s design, rather than on production or marketing plans.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata made its debut late last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show but with only one engine variant — the 198 horsepower (200 on the SE model) 2.4L direct-injection four-cylinder. However, it has been revealed that Hyundai will take the wraps off its turbo and hybrid variants of the 2011 Sonata at the upcoming New York Auto Show.

Finland-based Valmet Automotive is planning to introduce their Eva electric vehicle concept at the Geneva Motor Show.

Valmet designed the Eva electric vehicle to be a technological showpiece. It features a lightweight body, a 2+2 seating arrangement, and an advanced propulsion system. The propulsion system will allow the Eva to travel up to 160 kilometers (99 miles) on a single charge.

The interior of the Eva will be housing a Nokia-sourced “Human Machine Interface” with mobile handset connectivity. The system may be Valmet’s take on a more compelling Bluetooth setup.

Photos and details of the new 2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI have been released. The fifth generation Polo GTI will be officially unveiled both as a three- and five-door at Geneva next month.

The 2011 Polo GTI uses both the twin-charged 1.4-liter TSI engine and seven-speed DSG transmission from the Seat Ibiza Cupra. With steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters on the GTI, the engine utilizes a supercharger from idle to 3,000 rpm at which point the turbocharger kicks in providing 180 PS (132 kW / 178 hp) at 6,200 rpm and 184 lbs ft (249 Nm) of torque from 2,000 rpm. Volvo did show an electric version of the C30 hatchback at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, but that debut was apparently not an indication of future availability. A version of the show car will make production, but Volvo has announced it will not be available in the United States market.

At an event last month, Volvo’s Special Vehicles unit president Lennart Stegland, revealed that the production version of the C30 battery electric vehicle will only be available in Europe.
