Within a couple of months General Motors’s ‘Hummer’ brand will be owned by a Chinese company. But Hummer may not be the only ex GM brand to be bought by a Chinese company. China’s SAIC is reportedly pursuing a part ownership of the Saab brand.
According to Reuters, SAIC is talking with Koenigsegg – Saab’s new owners – about the possibility of buying shares of the Saab brand. If the deal pulls thru, Koenigsegg will still remain the owners of the brand and SAIC acting only a passive investor.
“SAIC is considering taking a stake in Saab but has not made up its mind on that or the size of any possible investment,” an inside source told Reuters. “If it finally decides to go ahead, it will most likely be the parent company rather than the listed SAIC that would take a stake in Saab.”
SAIC is very interested in buying part of the Saab brand, but the Chinese group is being held back by an earlier investment with Korean car maker Ssangyong. Ssangyong was forced to file for court protection earlier this year.
Whether or not SAIC will purchase part of Saab, Koenigsegg will still need to raise $420 million in order to complete the Saab transaction. So expect a partner to be announced within a couple of months.
